Lewis Cooper # 27

Pepsi-Cola Racing Team

Here's another rare color photo of an Athens Speedway car built to race in the newly formed "Sportsman" division in 1964. The Sportsman class featured the small block Chevy engine with a 2-barrel carburetor. The thought was to lower the cost of the engine building and overall cost, which in turn would increase the car count. But an unintended consequent resulted, as the more powerful fuel injected modified or super-modifieds stopped racing at Athens Speedway as the purse money dropped and the 2-barrel carbureted cars were not competitive with the super-modifieds. Drivers such as Bud Lunsford, Tootle Estes, Bill Hemby, Cabbage Pendley and other super-modified drivers stopped racing at Athens Speedway and moved on to tracks like Boyd's Speedway.
